How to Prepare for Sunday (My Saturday Night Checklist)

Read my E-Book, Radiant Modesty, to learn how to embrace God's ideal for the clothing we wear!

Hey Friends!

I don’t know about you… but I really struggle to get ready in time on Sunday mornings. It’s not uncommon for me to feel rushed and unprepared for church. You may even find me putting my makeup on in the car on our way to church (while my husband drives of course)!

These past few weeks I’ve been making an effort to course-correct my Sunday mornings. I finally decided to do what I do best – make a list!

The following list is a (new) list for me to keep track of everything that needs to get done the night before church so that I’m prepared the next morning. Once baby comes, our Sunday mornings will be a lot busier so I need to start working on this now. Plus, we all know it would be a bad habit if the pastors wife were always running late to church – and I really don’t want that to be me when my husband and I plant a church!

So, here’s my Saturday night checklist to help me prepare for Sunday:

How to Prepare for Sunday (My Saturday Night Checklist)

Preparing Myself:

  • Wash and blow dry my hair.
  • Choose/coordinate Sunday outfits. Set them out with shoes and jewelry.
  • Iron clothing if necessary.
  • Fill up my water bottle and refrigerate over night.
  • Gather all my things together – my Bible, notebook, purse, choir books, special music (when applicable).

Preparing My Home:

(Sometimes my husband likes to spontaneously invite people over for dinner. Having a prepared home is a must!)

  • Tidy up the house.
  • Clean up the bathroom.
  • Set out Ninja and supplies for breakfast (I have a wonderful hubby who makes us breakfast smoothies every Sunday!).
  • Take care of any Sunday meal prep – make a dish for get-togethers, or prep dinner in the crockpot.

“For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.” Psalm 84:10

Preparing for a Deputation Meeting:

(This only applies if we have a deputation meeting.)

  • Check tablecloth for display table. Iron if necessary.
  • Check prayer card and candy supply.
  • Set banner and all table supplies aside (or put in the car ahead of time).
  • Gather my personal things – makeup bag, comfy shoes for the afternoon, hair brush, extra pair of nylons, etc.

Preparing my Heart:

  • Read a passage of Scripture before bed.
  • Spend time in prayer asking God to prepare my heart for the sermons I will hear. Ask the Lord to help me reach out to those around me and not focus on myself.

“For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.” Ezra 7:10

To-Do On Sunday Morning:

  • Make the bed.
  • Have my devotions.
  • Do my hair and makeup.
  • Listen to hymns or sacred songs while I get ready (this helps prepare my heart to worship the Lord at church).
  • Eat breakfast.
  • Double check to make sure we have everything…
  • Leave on time!

Final Thoughts

How to Prepare for Sunday | My Saturday Night Checklist

This list sounds a bit long a complicated…. but most of these things don’t take much time at all. Sundays when we have deputation meetings will obviosuly look different, and preparing a meal or getting our display supplies ready isn’y necessary for every Sunday. This is just a master checklist to help me be prepared and not forget anything important when Sunday morning rolls around.

I believe it’s important to properly prepare for Sundays… and I readily admit my failure in this area lately!

Regular church attendance is so vital for growth as a Christian, it’s also necessary for the strengthening of fellow believers. I hope you are making regular church attendance a priority in your life!

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25

  1. There are definitely times when a checklist is needed to make sure everything gets done. My biggest problem on Sunday mornings would be sleeping in. I’ve been doing better at getting up on time, though.

I usually like to wash my hair Fri. night and let it dry while I sleep. (I’m just not patient enough to blow dry it.) On Sat. night, I put my hair up in curlers so it’s all curly on Sunday. If I miss washing my hair on Fri. night, I’ll do it Sat. morn and it still has time to dry most of the way before I put the curlers in at night. The routine works good for me if I stick to it.

    1. Yes, I certainly know what you mean! Although, I have noticed that when I prepare the night before, I’m a LOT more likely to get up on a time! Or, if we do sleep in a bit later, we can still get ready in time without feeling too rushed because I prepped a lot the night before!

That’s a good idea to wash your hair Friday! I definitely need to blow dry my hair Saturday nights – if I don’t sometimes it still wet and hard to style come Sunday! Lesson learned! 😉

I hope you can stick with your routine! It’s always great when we find something that truly works for us!

  2. Ahh, what a great, practical post, Rebekah! That’s something I really like about your blog – you draw application that is easy to follow. I agree that it’s important to prepare for Sundays as well, so we can have a heart and mindset of worship and not be distracted by running late and so on!

  3. What a great post! I have a hard time getting out of bed on Sundays so I try to go to bed early to get a good night’s rest. Once the baby comes my Sunday will be very busy. I also try to let the kids shower on Saturday nights so they don’t have to do it on Sundays. I try to make sure we get up early on Sundays. My husband makes smoothies on Sunday mornings.♥️

    1. Hi Cindy, that’s a great idea – to have the kids get showers and baths the night before. I definitely plan on doing that with my kiddos as well. And yes, getting up at a good time on Sunday mornings makes a huge difference!

  4. This was such a blessing to read because I always feel rushed as well on Sunday mornings! This will help me not only encourage other people at church but also serve the Lord better than before! Thank you❤️

    1. Congratulations!! I hope this post helps you set up a Sunday (or Saturday night) routine that works for you and baby! Enjoy your precious little one! ❤️

  5. Hi Bekky,
What a breath of fresh air to hear a beautiful mother dappling in religion while care for her little angel children. Personal as my Saturday night get a little frisky (trying for my 6th 😉) i find it hard to gather my home, heart and family ready to serve God each Sunday morning. You are such a blessing this post is just what I needed, Father really knows what’s up. Already set the bible out ready for Sunday, the say of God.
    God bless,
    Tammy ✝️
