Hello Friends,

This year I have been focusing on the word “flourish” and how it relates to various aspects of my life. One of my greatest desires this year, is to flourish spiritually. I want to grow closer to Lord, and grow in the grace and knowledge of my Lord and Savior.

Thankfully, growing and flourishing spiritually is a choice that we can make. Small changes can make a big difference.

Do you want to flourish spiritually?

Do you want to learn how to walk with God?

Do you want a FREE workbook to help you?

If yes, then you’ve come to the right place! Keep reading sweet friend! 🙂

6 Ways to Flourish Spiritually

1. Walk with God Daily

He hath shown thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Micah 6:8

The first and best way any young woman can choose to flourish spiritually, is by walking with God every day. What does it mean to “walk with God”?

Walking with God is…

  • Reading and meditating on God’s Word every day.
  • Praying and talking to Lord (don’t forget to ask Him to work in your heart!).
  • Allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you through God’s Word (the Bible).
  • Confessing and forsaking any sins to the Lord.
  • Obeying the commands you find in God’s Word.

When we take the time to walk with God daily, He will work in our hearts. God’s Word is a powerful book that can change our hearts and lives and mold us into the image of Christ. Prayer is the key to winning our spiritual battles, and the Holy Spirit will speak to us as we read and meditate on the Word of God.

However, to truly flourish spiritually, we can’t just walk with God when we feel like it. We must make the choice to set aside time for the Lord and walk with Him every day. As we make this daily choice, we will begin to flourish spiritually.

2. Forsake any Sin in Your Life

Make me to hear joy and and gladness… Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart O God: and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:8-10

Joy comes the heart that is cleansed from sin. In order to flourish spiritually, we need to ask the Lord to search our hearts and then confess and forsake the sins that He brings to our attention. When we confess and forsake sin, it’s as if a huge burden is lifted from our shoulders. We feel free and at peace with God again. This is a wonderful experience. No sin is worth the lack of joy we feel when it resides in our heart and life.

Confess and forsake sin and you will be forgiven (1 John 1:9) and you will experience the joy of the Lord once again.

A heart and life that is free from sin can truly flourish.

3. Trust in the Lord

Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green: and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8

To flourish spiritually, we must choose to trust the Lord – with everything. We all experience fears and anxieties. But what we choose to do with them is what makes all the difference. When we learn to take those fears and burdens to the Lord, He will carry them for us. The burdens are then removed from our heart and mind because we have chosen to trust the Lord to carry them for us.

Unfortunately, this is hard to do. It’s hard to trust the Lord with the little details of our life. It’s hard to totally release those anxieties from our heart and mind. But it’s what God has told us to do. We must make the choice to trust him.

Trusting the Lord is not a feeling, it’s a decision. The more we choose to trust the Lord, the easier it will become. Trusting in the Lord frees us from the burden of our fears and allows us to flourish.

So trust in the Lord instead of worrying about the future.

Trust in the Lord instead of worrying about your upcoming test.

Trust in the Lord instead of wondering “who am I going to marry?”

Trust in the Lord instead of following your own plans and desires.

A young woman who trusts in the Lord will flourish.

4. Find Joy in the Strength of the Lord

…for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10

You and I can not produce true joy and strength on our own. We often try, but we simply cannot do it. The strength of the Lord is what gives us true joy. When we choose to lean on His strength for each day, for our tough week, and the long month, He fills us with joy when we realize His strength sustains us!

So the next time you wake up dreading to face the day, turn to Lord for His strength. Pray for His strength and pray for joy.

He can give you strength as you study.

He can give you strength as you go to work.

He can give you strength as you face a fearful task.

He can give you strength to endure the unkindness of other people.

He can give you strength to obey His Word.

And best of all… His strength can be your source of Joy as well!

A young woman who finds joy in the strength of the Lord will flourish in her day-to-day life.

5. Meditate on the Word of God

But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth fruit in his season, his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall proper.” Psalm 1:2-3

This is one of the hardest steps for me, because I have a very busy mind and imagination. I am constantly thinking about the things I need to accomplish and other things that are happening in my life. But, if you and I want to flourish spiritually, we must have God’s Word in our hearts and minds. We must be thinking and meditating on the truths of God’s Word.

→ The next time you have your daily devotions, jot down a Bible verse on a sticky note or 3×5 card. Put it on your mirror, on the fridge or in your purse. Throughout the day, read over the verse, think about the truths it contains, and work on memorizing it.

A young woman who is saturating her heart and life in the Word of God will, without a doubt begin to flourish spiritually. Whatever she does will prosper.

6. Attend Church on a Regular Basis

Those that be planted in the house of the LORD, shall flourish in the courts of our God.” Psalm 92:13

Another way to flourish spiritually, is to “plant” ourselves in a place where we will hear the Word of God being taught. A solid, local church will help you grow and flourish spiritually. At a Bible-believing church you will be taught the Word of God, you will be sharpened and surrounded by other believers, and the things that you learn will help you flourish spiritually.

Many people make excused for not attending church – some say they can learn better at home on their own, others don’t think it’s all the important. But where else will you be surrounded by believers on a regular basis? Where else where you hear the teaching of God’s Word on a consistent basis? Attending church is important. In order to flourish spiritually, you and I should make church attendance a high priority in our lives!

  1. Thank you for this post, Rebekah. All of these points are so true! And if you think about it, these points “bounce” off of each other. For instance, back in August I had an urgent oral surgery and I was absolutely distraught. I turned to Scripture and memorized Psalm 46 in one sitting. Meditating on Scripture (#5) helped me trust God more (#3)! When we change, it effects every area of our life. Isn’t that so cool?!

By the way, Happy Resurrection Day on Sunday! He is risen!! 🙂

    1. Yes! You are so right! Thanks for sharing that particular example from your life. Isn’t it amazing how one good thing can produce another good thing? ☺
Happy Resurrection Day! Hope you have a wonderful Easter!

  2. Powerful reminders! The one about forsaking sin is a key one for me lately…it takes humbleness, which isn’t our most favorite thing 😉 I didn’t read this post until today, but it was just wanted I needed to read at this moment. This morning I woke up distraught and overwhelmed. I spent a few minutes pouring my heart out to the Lord, and He reminded me that He could only truly satisfy my heart. No matter what we long for (acceptance, a spouse, a dream job, etc.), none of those things will fulfill us if God isn’t satisfying our souls. I was immediately relaxed and calmed after He reminded me of that 🙂

    1. Thank you for sharing Olivia! Everything you said is so true… we often look to other things and other people for fulfillment and satisfaction, when it truly is only Christ that can satisfy! Sounds like God taught you a powerful truth to remember always!

  3. Thanks for sharing, I am wife and mother of 4 children (ages 21, 18, 16 and 16). My Husband was retrenched in 2013 and since then has not worked. In 2017 he worked for 2 months and again for 2 months in 2018. I know there’s a season for everything but how many times does one downgrade one’s standard of living and how does a mother continually remain strong and believe in a man who does not make his family a priority. We’ve lost our home and living on someone’s property all 6 of us in a one bedroom. This is a trying time and I have prayed, still praying, read my bible. Like Jesus said before he died: “Father why have you forsaken me.” This one line resonants with me so much as I’m constantly trying and praying for a breakthrough but nothing is happening. I trust and know God is making a way but when will Light enter our darkness.

    1. Hi Sarah,
I am so sorry to hear about the hard times that you have been going through. However you are doing the right thing by praying and getting into the Word of God! I hope that you will seek out a good church to attend if you haven’t already. The fellowship of other believers can be a huge help when we are going through hard times. Stay strong in the Lord!
      Rebekah
