May Review: Books, Goals, and Favorite Things

Hello Friends,

Another month has come and gone. May was a really great month with lots of memories made. Part of me wishes I could go back and savor some of the special events, but the pictures will have to suffice.

This month, we also saw some huge answers to prayer! Sometimes, it may feel like God is slow to answer our prayers, but He is always working even when we can’t see it. It’s a great reminder to think back and remember previous answers to prayer, because much of what we have in our life today is a direct answer to a prayer we prayed in the past!

Earlier this year, I specifically remember praying for wisdom many times and God has been gracious to slowly (but promptly) lead us to the answers we need. Don’t we serve such an amazing God?!?

I hope you’ve had a wonderful month as well, but if not, remember, his mercies are new every morning. This new month is a fresh new start as well.

Let’s jump into May’s review.

May Highlights:

Some highlights from our month…

  • God’s provision of a mini van. For a couple months now, Adam and I had been talking about getting a second vehicle to help provide people with a ride to church. We pick up various individuals who can’t drive but want to come to church and it was getting difficult to manage with a small car. Well, God answered our prayer! We were able to find a mini van that now provides 8 extra seats for us! We are hopeful that the Lord will fill those seats with people who want to learn more about Him.
  • Adam’s seminary graduation. My sweet and diligent husband has been slowly plugging away at his Master’s degree since our first year of marriage. Between deputation, starting a family, Daniel’s heart surgeries, moving and church planting, he slowly met the requirements needed to earn his Masters of Biblical Studies. We took a trip up to Connecticut this past month for the graduation banquet and ceremony. It was a lovely trip and I’m one proud wifey. 😉
  • Memorial Day.  We had a busy and exciting Memorial Day weekend. Adam participated in our town’s Memorial Day parade and ceremony (Daniel and I watched!) and then we spent the rest of the day with family!

May Reads:

These are the books I read this month…

Cultivate: A Grace-Filled Guide to Living an Intentional Life by Lara Casey

This was my second time reading through this book. I love the word “cultivate” and all the applications it can have in our daily lives. This book is full of gardening illustrations which were great to read during the spring season (especially since we just started another garden). Lara did a great job with this book and it’s very encouraging and motivating! The tips for practical application were great as well – I only wish there were more of them!

I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

I struggle with classic literature, but I really enjoyed this one and it was perfect for springtime! It’s a very charming little story. I was fascinated by all the little bits of health and wellness info spread throughout the book. Come to find out, the author struggled with depression and took an interest in Christian Science… that comes through in her writing a little bit. Obviously, I do not agree with the beliefs of Christian Scientists, but it does explain some of the oddities in the book. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and I’m glad I took the time to read through this childhood classic!

I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads.

No Greater Joy Volumes One and Two by Michael and Debi Pearl

I thoroughly enjoyed these two books! Basically, they are a compilation of articles from the No Greater Joy newsletter. The articles were insightful, helpful, and very entertaining. Some of the stories had my husband and I laughing uncontrollably! The articles on raising boys and training children how to obey/do what’s right were especially helpful to me. I did not agree with everything in both books, but I would still be willing to read them again.

I gave both books 4 stars on Goodreads.

Please remember that just because I read and enjoy a book does not mean I recommend it wholeheartedly. Read any book with discernment and always compare what you read to the perfect standard of God’s Holy Word!

May Goals:

I use the Powersheets Intentional Goal Planner to plan and keep track of my monthly and yearly goals.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t think I made great progress on my goals this past month. However, I did manage to deep-clean various areas of my home (I plan to continue that into the month of June). Taking an out-of-state trip in the middle of the month can really disrupt your schedule!

We did manage to plant a garden this month! This year we are doing potatoes, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, and peppers. Our little veggie plants are starting to grow. 🙂

May Favorites:

Here are a few favorite things from the month of May –

The Adventures in Odyssey Novacom Saga

Adam and I did a lot of driving this past month. To pass the time on our travels, we listened through the Adventures in Odyssey Novacom Series again. I grew up listening to Odyssey and the Novacom Saga was a favorite – very intriguing and suspenseful!

ThriftBooks Reading Rewards

I am sure you’ve heard me talk about this before! This month, ThriftBooks had some great deals going on for Reading Rewards members. I was able to earn TWO free book credits this month thanks to some opportunities to earn extra points! I love using ThriftBooks to expand my ever-growing collection of books. 🙂

I Would Love to Know

  • Do you have a favorite memory from January?
  • Did you read any good books?
  • Did you accomplish any goals?
  • Are there any favorite things you’ve been loving?

Until Next Time,

Rebekah Joy (2)
