A few months ago, I was gifted a new hymnal for my husband and I to enjoy. Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs is a new hymnal filled with almost 1,000 hymns compiled by Melody Publications. My husband and I both play the piano (Adam plays much more than I do) and we’ve both enjoyed playing out of this new hymnal!

What I Love About It

• Easy to read and play. The pages are a bit larger than your average hymnal, making the notes and words easy to read. The pages are very crisp and clear, making the songs easier to follow.
• 980 hymns! Yes, there are 980 hymns in this hymnal (with extra pages in the back to a few more.
• It includes old hymns that are hard to find. There are a lot of old (but new-to-me) hymns in this hymnal. We’ve discovered some old hymns that we really like, but have never seen in any other hymnbook before!
• Bible verses and snippets of hymn history. Nearly every page includes snippets of history shared about the hymn writers. There are also many, many Scripture references next to the hymn lyrics.
• Easier key signatures. The songs are written in simpler key signatures, making it easier to play and sing.
• Well thought-out categories and organization. It’s obvious this hymnal is well put together, with thoughtful organization, hymn histories, hundreds of Scripture references, and even additional stanzas that aren’t usually included.

My One Dislike:

Because there are so many hymns in this book (and some of them are very old) it can sometimes take quite a bit of paging through to find a hymn that’s familiar to me. There are so many hymns I have never heard of… ever. In other words, I have a lot of learning to do! 😉
