Habits I’m Working on as a Stay at Home Mom

Read my E-Book, Radiant Modesty, to learn how to embrace God's ideal for the clothing we wear!

Hello Friends,

A few weeks ago, I shared a post called Weeding out the Slothfulness in our Hearts and Homes. If you had the chance to read it, I hope it was a blessing to you!

As a follow-up, I thought I would go ahead and share some habits that I have been working on personally. I like to consider myself an organized and disciplined person, but truthfully, there is a lot of work to do in my heart and home as well.

Here are some ways I’m weeding out slothfulness in my heart and home.

Habits I’m Working On as a Stay at Home Mom

1. Waking up Before my Kids for Quiet Time

This is a difficult one for me personally. I have always been a night owl and my boys rarely sleep in. But I have found that if I can just wake up 30 minutes before my boys start busting through their bedroom door, I can fit in my Bible reading and prayer time first thing. I’ve noticed that if I don’t have my quiet time first thing in the morning, it’s a lot harder to make it happen later in the day.

(This habit also requires earlier bedtimes which my husband and I have been working on throughout this year! Staying up too late is something we have struggled with for a very long time – we like to talk too much!) 🙂

2. Staying Hydrated

Lately, I haven’t been doing a great job of this… so I’m working on it. It helps when I have something other than water to sip on throughout the day. I really love the all day sippers from Trim Healthy Mama. The Singing Canary is probably my favorite, so I try to mix up a big batch of that during the week and it will last me a few days. I also love a nice cold glass of Good Girl Moonshine after a big meal (don’t worry, it’s a crazy name but it is absolutely NOT an alcoholic beverage!). We are also huge fans of Redmond Re-lyte and my husband and I usually drink a hot cup of herbal tea before bed (red raspberry leaf and ginger tea are my favorites).

And of course, a nice big water bottle to carry around throughout the day helps too. I love my 30 ounce Stanley that I was gifted for Christmas last year (I am very hard on water bottles and cups, but this one seems to be holding up well).

3. Having a Written To-Do List for Every. Single. Day.

I don’t know about you, but I am SO MUCH more productive when I have a written to-do list for the day. For the past few years now, I have been using a Big Happy Planner in the vertical layout and I love it so much. There is a nice long daily section with mornings, afternoons and evenings blocked off so I can fill in my to-do list accordingly. In order for me to be the most successful at following my to-do list, I try to write it up the night before.

4. Moving My Body Every Week

This is something I’ve been working on since my second baby. I don’t do this perfectly, but I’ve been trying to move my body a little bit every week. Here are some different ways I try to move my body each week:

  • Walks with my boys
  • Walks as a family
  • Jumping on our trampoline with my boys
  • A quick core workout or weighted workout from Youtube
  • Taking the stairs a LOT (especially on the days I don’t get outside)

Again, I don’t do this perfectly. There are some days I don’t get much exercise at all. But if I can just fit in a few of these each week, I’m happy with that.

5. Making Time to Read a Little Bit Every Day

I love reading… always have, always will. Since becoming a mom, it has definitely been harder to find time for reading, which is why I try to read just a little bit every day – even if it’s just 10 minutes before bed. I don’t ever want to lose the love of reading or the habit of learning!

(I’m planning to share more about reading as a mom in an upcoming blog post, so stay tuned!)

Last but not least…

6. Physically Pulling out the Weeds

Confession: I very much dislike weeding. Thankfully, at our current house there isn’t a lot of weeding that needs to be done, but at the end of summer, I noticed weeds popping up all over the place. There were also some outdoor projects that I was putting off, so I decided to stop being a sloth and finally tackle them. 😉 I only have a couple more trouble spots to deal with outside, and things look so much better already. It feels good to know I’m putting in the effort to make our home look nice – not just on the inside, but on the outside too. Now that it’s Autumn, I will focus more of my attention on some indoor trouble spots.

Final Thoughts

Well, those are some habits I have been working on these past few weeks and months. Building good habits is a continual process but one that benefits so many areas of our lives. Good habits help our families too. Consider this quote about habits:

“Good habits are hard to develop but easy to live with; bad habits are easy to develop but hard to live with.” (Brian Tracy, Focal Point)

Please leave a comment and let me know what habits you’re working to cultivate in your life! I’m cheering you on, friends!
