6 Reasons Why Christian Girls Should NOT Have a Blog

Hey Friends,

Today’s post is a little bit different than my typical post. You are probably wondering what in the world this is all about – I’m mean “why shouldn’t Christian girls have a blog?”

This post is not to discourage godly young women from creating and having a blog. However, I do want to share a few reasons why some Christian young women should not start a blog.

First let me share with you my previous experience with blogging when I was about 17.

My First Blogging Experience

Before I started this blog (about 4 years ago), I was incredibly torn about the idea of having a blog. I loved the idea, but it also scared me. I did not know if having a blog was the right thing for me to do, and I didn’t know if I really wanted to share my thoughts in such a public way. Before starting More Radiance Blog, I actually started two other blogs. The first was called My Journey Steps. I don’t remember how long that blog lasted – from what I can remember it was only a few days or a couple weeks -it wasn’t long! One evening I just got so scared about having my thoughts up on the internet that I got on my blog and deleted it right away!

I don’t know when I decided I wanted another blog, but soon after that I started a blogspot blog called Thoughtful Pages. This one lasted much longer. Thoughtful Pages was the blog that made me want a “real blog”. Like a self hosted, self-paid-for, blog!

After that, I began reading everything I could find about blogging. I read blogs about blogging, I borrowed books from the library, I brainstormed names for my new blog… my days were consumed with blogging ideas. Soon I began to research blog hosting platforms, which you need in order to start a self-hosted blog.

Finally, I decided on the name and hosting platform. So one day I finally made the jump. I purchased a hosting package with Blue Host and I started More Radiance Blog!

Now I have been blogging for well over three years and I love it! I don’t regret investing in a self hosted blog, and I have a learned a lot of things along the way.

These days new blogs are popping up everywhere. So many people have or want a blog. But should everyone out there really have a blog?

I personally think there are several reasons why some people (or more specifically, some Christian girls) should NOT have a blog… and that’s what the rest of this post is all about. Please know that I am not perfect, nor do I think I am a perfect blogger. I have made (and will continue to make) lots of mistakes! However, please look at this post as a friendly, and cautionary post for those considering the ideas of starting a blog.

6 Reasons Why Christian Girls Should Not Have a Blog

#1. You Should Not Have a Blog if You are Carnal

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” Romans 8:7-8

What does it mean to be carnal? To be carnal means earthly, fleshly, or of the world. If you are more interested in the things of this world instead of the things of God, then that will show in what you write and share on your blog. Carnal Christians will naturally encourage carnality (or worldliness) in other Christians.

We all have some degree of wordiness in us. We are imperfect people. Worldliness is something we all need to guard against (myself included!). However, if you really don’t care about the things of God… then you probably should NOT have a blog. You will end up encouraging carnality and worldliness in others.

#2. You Should Not Have a Blog if You are Spiritually Immature

For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Hebrews :-14

In other words… please don’t take it upon yourself to teach others through a blog, if you are just starting to grow in the Lord. God takes time to mature us.

Friends, I still have a lot growing that I need to do as well! I am not saying that I have reached full spiritual maturity (far from it!). However, growing up in a Christian home, I have been taught the Word of God since I was a very little girl. I did not just get saved a couple years ago…

If you are still a baby Christian, I would suggest taking more time to grow and mature spiritually before starting a blog.

#3. You Should Not Have a Blog if You Struggle with Your Words

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” Ephesians 4:31

If you have a hard time controlling what you say… you may want to reconsider starting a blog! God is going to hold every one of us accountable for the words that we say. Being overly sarcastic, rude, or ungodly in the way that we speak is not pleasing to the Lord.

If you do have a blog, be very careful about the words that you share and the things that you say. Remember, we are all going to be held accountable for every word that we speak!

#4. You Should Not Have a Blog If You Have Low Moral Standards

But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation [behavior]; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16

Do you struggle to set and keep high moral standards? Do you have high standards of modesty, purity, and godliness? Dear friend, if you do have low personal standards, then there is a possibility that you could be a stumbling block to others. We all need to be very careful what we share via social media and our blogs (if we have one). Immodest pictures, ungodly movies, music, and more can all be a stumbling block to someone who is a “weaker” Christian.

Regardless of the personal standards that you have, always be very careful about the things that you share on social media and on your blog (if you have one). As Christians we must be considerate of other Christians who may struggle in areas that we do not. We are all unique with varying struggles so we must “look out for one another” and keep each other from stumbling spiritually.

#5. You Should Not Have a Blog If You Are Already Too Busy!

Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:16

Unfortunately, blogging takes a lot of time and work! It’s not just all the writing. It’s the writing, editing, proof-reading, creating images, filling in links, changing the fonts, scheduling… Sometimes I think “if only this didn’t take so much time!”

If you have limited time, then blogging might not be for you. It’s amazing how fast time flies between posts. Before you now it, it’s time to write another one!

We all have to make sure we are using our resource of time in the best way possible. For me, that might be blogging or cleaning my house. For you, it may be something different entirely.

Before starting a blog, make sure you actually have the time to do it.

#6. You Should Not Have a Blog If Your Parents (or Husband) Don’t Approve

Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;” Ephesians 6:2

Who is the authority in your life right now… your parents (if you’re single)? Or your husband (if you’re married)? You should make sure you have your parent’s (or your husband’s!) full approval before starting a blog. If they are not comfortable or supportive of the idea… don’t do it. We need to honor those who are in authority over us, even if we don’t agree with them all the time.

Before starting a blog, make sure it’s okay with your parents or your husband.

Final Thoughts

Before starting a blog, please make sure it’s something that God would actually want you to do. If you think you should have a blog, then earnestly pray about it! God will show you whether or not He wants you to venture into the blogging world.

If this post has shown you that blogging is not for you, or you need to wait, then please wait! It never hurts to be cautious!

For those of you seriously interested in starting a self-hosted blog of your own. I would recommend doing research and learning all that you can about blogging. I would also suggest looking into Blue Host as your hosting company. I have been using them ever since starting this blog and the customer service is fabulous. I’m also a Blue Host affiliate… so if you decide to make a purchase through Blue Host I will make a commission. However, I would recommend them even if I wasn’t an affiliate!

Next Monday I will share a follow-up post on Why Christian Girls SHOULD Have a Blog. 🙂 There will also be a new post this coming Thursday!

  1. Well said, Rebekah! I recently had to take a step back and reevaluate with my blog, because it was taking too much of my time. Soon, I will be reentering the blog world, but with a plan in place. God puts a big priority on how we spend our time and I want to make sure I’m not wasting mine!

    1. Hey Ryana,
I am so glad that you were able to take a break – sometimes we all need re-evaluate our priorities + how we spend our time, and then make changes accordingly. Glad you were able to do that! 🙂

  2. These are very good points, Rebekah. I’ve read a post or two with a similar title before so I kind of knew what you’d be talking about in this post, but how you laid it out was very different and consulted the Bible much more, which I love 😉

I personally have a blog and one of the main reasons I began it was to share my writing. I’ve loved words since I was very little (as a cancer patient, I shocked my doctors when they saw me holding my own against my mother in advanced word-finds at just 6 years old) and I can’t remember when I began writing. I’ve just always loved putting my thoughts and ideas and stories down on paper. I wanted to be able to share my writing with others closest to me by starting a blog.
Now, I wouldn’t say that I chose to begin a blog with the wisest of reasons (I didn’t seek God’s will in it as I should have… I kind of just went for it), but over the 3 years I’ve been blogging, my passions and goals and all have changed. I still love blogging. I love it even more, in fact, than I did at the beginning. But I’ve grown spiritually and mentally and have a different vision now. At first, I blogged about random things, but I’ve since gotten into a groove and have specific post topics and series and things. I’ve found that I love posting on spiritual topics.

I’m praying about this and still have a LOT of praying and consulting with my mom and all to do, but one day I’d love to expand my blog to a self-hosted site and do things more professionally and try to reach more girls. I have found in blogging a passion for encouraging and learning alongside other young ladies. One thing I’ve admired about this blog from the very beginning was how professional it was. From the self-hosted site, to the graphics, to the layout… everything has been professional and executed with excellence. Thank you so much, Rebekah!!

Do you mind sharing some of the resources you have used (books, blogs, etc.) to research and read up on blogging? My goal has never been to make money blogging, but all the resources I’ve seen focus in on the whole money-making aspect of blogging :/ I’d love to pick up a helpful book on blogging!

    1. Hi Grace!
Thanks so much for sharing your personal blogging story ☺ I am so glad that blogging has given you a greater desire to help other young women, it’s done the same for me as well! I would be happy to share some of my favorite books and blog resources… I will share them in next week’s blogging post. Some of them will be about making money through blogging… but not all of them. Thanks for asking!

  3. This was a challenging post! I do have a blog (well, technically two…) and the main thing that I have a problem with is that it does take a lot of time. It also can be addicting when you get caught up in the whole community of blogging. Making sure your priorities are in the right place is very important. I’m excited to see the next post! 🙂

    1. Yes, I totally agree. Just today I told my hubby that “a blogger’s work is never done!” That is why planning and prioritizing are so important!

  4. Such good points, thanks for sharing! It’s always good to have reminders like this, to make sure that we are keeping things in perspective, and most importantly, following God and His will for us and our blog. (Or maybe the lack of one.) Blogging is definitely not something that should be taken lightly; Especially considering the fact that you can influence SO many people with your words and posts.
    Blessings!

    1. Yes! Just like anything… too much of a good thing can still be too much! And you are right, with the internet we have no idea who we could be impacting, so we need to make sure it’s for the best!

  5. You are so right, Rebekah! There are so many Christian blogs and I wonder if I ever could read all those ;))
There are all very interesting, but I think it is a waste of time for me as reader to read the same topic thousands posts and a waste of time for writers for write it or to copy and paraphrase other blog’s articles.
I find your blog original, with interesting, new and fresh ideas and I love it. I hope God will help you to continue your work and inspire other Christian girls.

    1. I agree, there are very few blogs that I read on a regular basis…. simply because there are just too many!! Thanks for the encouragement, Adriana!

  6. Thank you so much for sharing this! Starting a blog has been something I have always wanted to do, as I love writing and I love Jesus, but your post reminded me of several things.
Firstly, I realize that my spiritual maturity needs to grow more fully. I was saved when I was a child, but my walk with God has faltered and stumbled in the last couple years, and I have only recently (last year or so) rekindled it. I do not want to lead someone astray while I am still learning to follow Jesus in every part of my life.
Secondly, I am still working on casting out my worldly habits and influences, which could easily infiltrate my good intentions in starting a blog. I deeply appreciate your honesty, it may have saved me a disastrous attempt!
    Blessings!
    Belle

    1. Hello Belle,
I’m glad this post was helpful to you!! Even though you may not be ready to start a blog at this time in your life… you can still invest in younger girls and teach them what you are learning. I hope that someday, when you’ve had time to grow stronger in your faith, that you will start a blog to share what you have learned! Keep growing in Him!!
      Rebekah

  7. This is so good, Rebekah! I’m only an “Instablogger” but I can tell you that it’s nothing to take lightly. For one, I think people assume it’s just all fun and no work. Yes, it is fun, but it’s also a lot of work…haha! And it’s also a huge blessing and responsibility at the same time. Having a platform is awesome, but it’s nothing to take lightly. It’s something I literally have to pray about every day with everything I post and say. Your post was a good reminder!

    1. Hi Elizabeth,
I’m so glad that you pray about the things you post – I wish more women did that… and thanks for being a good example with the things that you do post ☺ And yes, you are right… these things are fun but a lot of work! Thanks for sharing!!
