I often wondered what godly young men are looking for in a wife. Partly because I was curious and also because I knew that finding out the answer would help me prepare to become a godly wife.
I thought, “If I asked a godly guy what he (and other guys) were looking for in a future wife, what would he say?”
I knew you would love to know the answer to this question as well. So… I finally asked!
Thankfully it didn’t take long for me to get a complete answer. The list to follow was not written by me but by a godly friend of mine. He compiled this list with the help of a few of his friends.
So, what are young men looking for in a wife? Here are their answers.
From a Man’s Perspective
I would like to marry a woman who . . .
…has the characteristics of the Virtuous Woman – Proverbs 31:10-31
…is Godly – I Timothy 6:6
…has a meek and quiet spirit – I Peter 3:4
…honors her parents – Ephesians 6:2
…will submit to her husband – Ephesians 5:22
…will reverence her husband – Ephesians 5:33b
…will love her husband – Titus 2:4
…loves children – Titus 2:4
…will be a helpmeet for her husband – Genesis 2:18
…loves the Lord above all else – Deuteronomy 6:5
…dresses modestly – I Timothy 2:9
…has compassion for the lost – Matthew 9:36-38
“Marriage is the second most important decision of life. When I was asked to compile a list of ‘What a man is looking for in a wife’ my mind immediately went to Proverbs 31. This passage describes a woman of outstanding character but unfortunately, godly people are becoming fewer and fewer. Therefore, it is more important than ever before that young men and women lead godly lives and ask God to give them a godly spouse.
Carnal people are attracted to other carnal people but spiritual people desire to be sharpened and uplifted by the godliness of others. This principle also applies to marriage. A carnal young man is much more concerned about a woman’s beauty, fun, and freedom from parental authority than a woman’s godly character. A godly young man will pray and search diligently until he finds a woman whose worth is far above rubies (Proverbs 31:10). Ladies, please allow Jesus Christ to mold you into a virtuous woman and God will give you a godly husband.” -A Christian Young Man
Final Thoughts
What do you think of their answers? This list was written by a young man (and his friends) but it’s God’s ideal as well.
What will you do to become this kind of a woman? Are you willing to rise to the challenge?
I felt a bit sobered when I read that list -it’s a lot to live up to. I can’t do it, and frankly, neither can you. However, God doesn’t expect us to be perfect, just growing. By His grace we can become the godly women (and future wives) that He wants us to be.
(A special thank you to Daniel, Christian, Thomas, and Matt for making this post possible!)

I kind of had the same thought as you after reading this list, that it’s a lot to live up to! lol There are definitely so many areas that I need to work on. I’m enjoying making the most of this season of my singleness in becoming more like Christ and cultivating a deeper relationship with Him 🙂
Yes, and that’s where it all needs to start… your relationship with God is the MOST important thing. If you get that right, a lot of the other things will fall into place! 🙂
As young women we can act like a Christian, look like a Christian and still not have a strong Foundation in Christ. I know a friend that got married on the acting of a Christian, but found out the foundation of Christ was not there. This can make a marriage crumble real fast.
Make sure the list isn’t to please the guy but to have it in your heart to please God. When a guy looks for a gal to marry, it would be wise to know the foundation of her heart. As a young gal we should make sure our guy has a strong foundation in Christ and it is in his heart. Again not pleasing man but God.
Good thoughts – thank you for sharing 🙂 We definitely want to make sure what we do is real and genuine!
Wow, this shows a lot that I need to work on! Thanks for this post! I’ve wondered often what Christian men are looking for in a wife and this helps a lot!
Thank you for continuing to pray for me!
