Following God Instead of Chasing Dreams

Lately, I have been working harder to become a go-getter and chase after my dreams and goals instead of just thinking about them.  The list in my post on Grit has certainly come to mind several times.  However, I’ve noticed that lately I have been spending more time chasing those goals than I have been following after God.

The other week I was listening to The Sound of Music soundtrack (I love Musicals!!) and the lyrics to the song, Climb Every Mountain stuck out to me….

“Climb every mountain, search high and low, follow every byway, every path you know.  Climb every mountain, ford every stream, follow every rainbow, till you find your dream.”

Will we climb mountains, search high and low, follow every path and byway, ford streams, and follow rainbows just to find our dreams?

What if we followed after God like that?

Are we willing to climb mountains, searching high and low for Him?

I am so glad that God tells us in His Word that He is near… we don’t have to search and chase all over the world trying to find Him.

But are we following after Him?

Have we done anything to draw near to Him this month, this week, this day?  We don’t have to ford streams and follow rainbows to find God but we do need to make Him the higher priority over chasing our goals and dreams.

{I would love to know} What can you do to follow after God today?

  1. Hi Rebekah,

I loooove this post. The Lord is teaching me this same thing. Sometimes I desire so badly for things to happen in my life I set them as my priority instead of where God might want me. Normally I feel like this happens when I think that God is approving of my dreams and that this is what He wants for me anyway but what I’m learning now is that as soon as I switch the priority of the dreams over God, that is when I can no longer enjoy chasing my dreams to the fullest.
God longs to be apart of our dreams, which is why he commands us to seek Him first, He wants to show us how good of a God He is and that’s so exciting to me. I’m so glad you’re also learning this as well. It’s exciting to know I’m not alone.

    1. Hi Ashley,
That is so exciting that God has been teaching you some of the same things! Your comment about God longing to be apart of our dreams reminds me of Psalm 37:4. Thank you so much for sharing!!

  2. Absolutely! We have to seek Him with our whole heart. And not because we need something from Him, even though we need EVERYTHING from Him, but just because He is worthy to be sought after and we want to know more about Him!
