“That’s not fair!”
I am sure we’ve all said this many times growing up. We still think this way sometimes -even if we no longer say it out loud. We want what we think we deserve.
Other lives can look so much better. Other people may be prettier, smarter, more outgoing, have a dream job, a great relationship, a better house and so much more.
And what about the tough times? Sickness, disappointments, breakups, family problems, failures, etc. Sometimes we think we have a right to tell God, “that’s not fair!”
But is that really the case?
Think about it. Who decides what is fair in this world? People. We are the ones that try to decide what’s fair and what’s not. The world tries to tell us what we deserve. If God gave us what we deserve then none of us would be allowed to have a relationship with Him. As a result we most certainly would not be going to Heaven someday.
So, when life doesn’t seem fair, how should we respond?
4 Ways to Respond When Life’s Not Fair
1. Thank God for giving you exactly what you need. God does give us exactly what we need. Even if we don’t always understand. Instead of questioning Him, we should thank Him!
“But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory…” Philippians 4:19
2. Choose joy instead. Joy really is a choice. Instead of feeling miserable we should take James’ advice and…
…count it all joy… James 1:2
3. Learn contentment. According to Paul, contentment is learned.
“…I have learned in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” Philippians 4:11
Just like joy, contentment is a choice. Instead of dwelling on what we don’t have, we should remember all the wonderful things we do have.
4. Remember that God works all things for good. When life doesn’t seem fair, we can rest in the knowledge that it in the end it will all work out for good. Just like a single puzzle piece, everything that happens in our life will one day fit together to form a beautiful picture.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God…” Romans 8:28
The next time we think our life is unfair, we should remember that God’s way is always perfect. We should be extremely grateful that He hasn’t been fair with us but instead showers us with His mercy and grace!
