11 Things to Pray for Your Future Husband

How Should You Pray for Your Future Husband?

To be honest, I haven’t always prayed for my future husband, but in the last few weeks I have begun praying for him more often -almost daily.  I now have a list in my prayer closet that I use to pray for my future husband.

This month, I am following 31 prayer prompts for my prayer time and today’s prompt is to pray for your future husband.  Because of this, I decided to share the 11 things I like to pray for my future husband.  This list will help you get a better idea of how to pray for your future husband as well… and I have a free printable for you at the end!  Without further ado, here is my list:

11 Things I Pray for My Future Husband

1) Grace and help for personal struggles

I have no idea what personal struggles my future husband may be facing, or what kind of things he is dealing with today.   So my prayer is that God will give him grace and help.  We all need those two things each day!

2) Wisdom

God has promised to give wisdom to those who ask for it (James 1:5).  We all need wisdom as we go through our days and my future husband is no exception.  My prayer is that God will give him wisdom for today and tomorrow, and wisdom in all his decision making.

3) His Prayer Life

Prayer is the most powerful tool God has given us in our christian life.  A strong prayer life is crucial in the life of my future husband.  My prayer is that God will strengthen his prayer life, increase his diligence in prayer, and increase his faith as a result.

4) His Character

It’s hard to cultivate and maintain strong character traits.   I want my husband to have strong character and integrity.  I do not know his strengths and weaknesses and that is why I want to pray for his character.

5) His Walk with God

This one should probably be at the top, but when I created this prayer list, I did not put things in order of importance, I simply wrote them down!  However, my future husband’s walk with God is the key to keeping his life on track.  It’s the key to his joy, his contentment, and his strength.  A close and intimate relationship with God will help him in every area of his life!

6) His Goals

I don’t know what all of my future husband’s goals are, but I am sure he has some!  I hope his goals and desires are in-line with God’s will and purpose for his life.   I want to pray for my future husband’s goals and ambitions because a man without vision and purpose won’t accomplish the things God created him to do.

7) His Purity

We live in a sinful, dirty world that attacks moral purity from every corner.  It’s nearly impossible to go anywhere in the world without our eyes, ears, and minds, being assaulted with impurity.   Moral purity is a struggle for men and women but I especially need and want to pray for my future husband’s purity.  In every sense of the word, I need to pray that my future husband is remaining pure in his heart, mind, and actions.

8) His Emotions

Girls aren’t the only ones with emotions.  Guys have them too!  I want my future husband to experience joy, not discouragement.  I want him to show love and patience instead of anger.  I need to pray that he is yielding his emotions to God and following truth, not feelings.

9) His Relationships with Family, Friends, and Coworkers

It’s impossible to go through life without interacting with others.  In many ways, men have to interact with people even more than woman do.   At work he may have to interact with unsaved people.  His friends may have a positive or negative effect on his spiritual life and walk with God.  His family may be unsaved, or he may struggle with his relationships with parents or siblings.  I need to pray for him in his interactions and relationships with other people.

10) His Finances

Whether he needs money, or needs wisdom in managing finances, I should be praying for my future husband in this area.  Men are to be the providers of the home, therefore my future husband needs to learn how to wisely manage his money (and other resources – like his time!).

11) Discretion

This last one is very similar to wisdom.  However, I hope my future husband is cultivating discretion.  Discretion with his words, discretion in his actions, and discretion in the decisions and choices he makes on a daily basis.

There You Have It

Those are the 11 things I like to pray for my future husband.  There are probably many more I could (and should) add to this list but these are just the 11 things I stick to.

Even if there is no eligible young man in sight, I hope you will talk to God about your future husband.   I know some young women have decided not to pray for their future husband until God reveals who he is… Whatever you decide, I hope you pray about your future, whether it’s about a someday husband or not 🙂

I have created a free printable list of these 11 things.  It’s the one hanging in my prayer closet 🙂  You may download your own list (for free) to use as well…

  1. I do pray for my future husband–not as often as I should, though. I liked reading through your list of different ways to pray for him. Thanks! 🙂

  2. I have never thought about praying for my future husband until recently. I’m going to start praying for him!

    1. I have not thought about either but Now , I have something to add to my prayer list ! Prayer is powerful and Amazing ! To god be the glory !

  3. I always pray for my future husband, and I definitely think it’s important! But I don’t really pray for him in a lot of specific ways, and that’s something I need to start doing! I want to get more specific with my prayers in general anyways 🙂 And I also thought of a good idea the other day! I have written a couple of letters to my future husband already. And I pray for him almost every day. And the other day you were talking about writing out our prayers. I think it would be a good idea to write out one of the prayers I pray for him, to give to him some day! That way instead of just saying “I prayed for you” he would know HOW I prayed for him 🙂

    1. I need to get more specific in my prayers as well… Specific Prayers = Specific Answers! I LOVE the idea of writing out prayers for your future husband. I think it’s a great idea! I would love to start writing letters to him, but I might wait until I know for sure who he is 😉 writing out prayers for him to read would be even more special! Thanks for sharing that idea 🙂

  4. I love your list! I think it’s important to pray for you future husband, even if you haven’t met him yet.
I recently watched a video by Bethany Baird about praying for your future husband and was greatly encouraged to diligently pray for him each day. I have been doing that each morning and am very excited to see how these prayers have helped him! 😉

    1. Thanks, Tashia! I am so glad you pray for your future husband… It’s neat to think that our future husbands could be praying for us as well 🙂

  5. I like to pray for my future husband sometimes! 🙂 I don’t think it’s a MUST, but I definitely think it’s beneficial! Hmm, I’ll have to think about that second question. I’m sure there are heaps, like you said! 😉

  6. I thought your list was quite complete, Rebekah, and getting even more specific will be an amazing privilege once you know who he is, during courtship + beyond! It makes sense to begin praying consistently for our future husbands now already because daily prayer for them will become so vital in marriage (aka the “real thing” 😄, living out a commitment!) and also because, honestly, praying consistently for ANYONE in our lives takes effort. (Is it accurate to say it “stretches” us somehow?) 🙂 The apostle Paul was a tremendous example with his constant prayer for churches and individuals… I think the Lord would love to answer more prayer like his!!

    1. Emily, I love what you said about praying for our future husbands now… It’s great practice for the real thing! 😉 I read over and over again how vital prayer is to the marriage relationship, so it’s definitely a habit we should be building now. And yes, it will be so nice to get more specific once God reveals who my future husband is… It takes faith to pray for someone when you aren’t 100% sure who he is 🙂

  7. I love this! Thanks, Rebekah, for your thoughts on the topic, and some new things to add to my prayer list!

    1. Thank you, Kimberly! I’m glad you found some things to add to your prayer list… thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment! 🙂

  8. This might sound silly but I’ve always thought that praying for my future husband was actually… selfish. What if God doesn’t call me to get married? I have gone through a study or two and prayed about it still have that desire in my heart but one can never be 100% that means God still has that in His plan for me someday. It almost gets to be this paralyzing fear. I’m not praying for anyone if this is the case, I’m just spouting off about something God knows He doesn’t have planned for me and probably is shaking His head in disappointment. I’m slowly coming to terms with this but I felt called to share…

    1. I understand… And I don’t think it sounds silly!! I know some very godly young women who have chosen not to pray for their future husband and completely trust God with him and their future marriage if that if His will for their life. Of course that doesn’t mean that those who pray for him aren’t trusting God about it… I think it’s just a personal decision each young lady should make. Marriage isn’t for all of us, but God wants to bless us with a joyful and fulfilling life in singleness or marriage. Just talk to God about it! If you feel you shouldn’t spend your prayer time praying for a future husband, than that’s totally okay. If you think God wants you to pray for him, then do so. I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer to this… It’s merely a personal decision. I hope that helps 🙂
Thank you so much for being honest and sharing your thoughts, Marisa!

      1. At this point I’m not sure if I should. Marriage and family are strong desires of mine, always have been and still are even after my studies and time with God praying about it. But I still have so much anxiety over the ‘what if?’ I’ve yet to have a boyfriend and I’ll be 20 in May. I just don’t know anymore… thanks for replying!

        1. Marisa, please don’t worry!! The single years are SUCH a blessing!! Just live to the full right where you are… The right one will come along at the right time (if that is God’s will). And he will be happy to know you haven’t been pining for him but instead living a full life and becoming a godly woman that he will LOVE. You have so many beautifully years ahead of you… Please don’t worry. I am almost 20 as well, and the both of us have so much we can do RIGHT now… We have no need to worry. We can just trust Him fully!!
